Chapter 3

Janel had a difficult time keeping Barry away from her mother. Momma didn’t like her baby girl disappearing for most of the day and giving her a lame excuse as to where she went. But Barry kept offering to meet her places around the county close to where she lived. She didn’t want anyone she knew to see her with him and start making comments.

They had already had one confrontation from an old angry woman at the local movie theater. On their way back to the car, after the movie, a lady of about one hundred fifty had made a remark about “them coloreds” as Janel walked hand in hand with Barry. The old woman was with a much younger woman who appeared to be her daughter. The younger woman quickly apologized for the older woman, saying medication was causing her to say things. Barry was a little taken back, but Janel told him to give it no mind.

He could tell it bothered her.

When they got into the car, Barry took her face in his hands and kissed her several times. She embraced him and returned the passion. They were still in the car making out like school kids when most of the other ones had left the theater lot.

“You don’t have to go home right away,” he told her. “And I can drop you off there.”

He’d figured out she was riding a bus to and from work.

Janel shook her head and tears flowed from her eyes. Barry drove her home over her objections. It was too late for the bus route anyway. He let her out in front of her house. Although she didn’t know it, Barry stopped the car a block away and made sure Janel went into the house safely. Convinced she was okay, he drove off.

“How about going away for the weekend?” Barry asked Janel as they walked through the Philadelphia Museum of Art for the third time. It had been a month since the incident at the movie theater

Janel was wondering when he would want something more than the casual day at the park. She had been in more art galleries than she knew existed in the Philadelphia area. They had been to a big nightclub around Exton once, but left early when she felt snide looks from the other black women in the club sear into her. A black guy had bumped into them on the way out the door and she was certain it was intentional. As they were getting in Barry’s car, Janel heard a group of white men jeer at them as they left the parking lot. They ended up sitting in the car for another hour outside a convenience store while Barry stroked her face. He could feel the anger raging on the inside.

“People can be such assholes,” was all he had said over the incidents.

She had yet to meet his family as he had yet to meet hers. Most of her gentlemen callers never showed back up after meeting Janel’s mother.
